Elaborating on a number of infrastructure schemes initiated by the UPA government which he said were a priority in building the nation, Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan on Sunday assured quarry machinery owners that he would take up their request of subsidy for buying the machines with the Ministry concerned very soon.
Releasing the 10th anniversary document of the Tamil Nadu Sand Quarry Machinery Owners Association at Chennai Trade Centre, the minister said that the government was keen on building infrastructure in equal measure in both the rural and urban areas in the country. This was reflected in the fact that the Bharat Nirman programme has seen a 28 per cent increase in funds in the current fiscal compared to the previous year, he said. This apart, over 1,25,000 houses have been built by the UPA government in the rural areas benefiting thousands of families.
Hailing the association for its services to those involved in quarrying, and to society in general, Vasan said sand quarrying was one of the most fundamental operations necessary for achieving the vision of better infrastructure in the country.
Earlier, the minister unveiled memorial statues depicting a seaman and his family at the Chennai Seafarer’s Club here.
