Tuticorin Port renamed due to efforts of minister g.k.vasan

The Tuticorin Port trust has been renamed as V.O. Chidambaram Pillai Port Trust.

The Cabinet on Thursday approved the change in name in memory of VOC who started the first passenger ship ferry service between Tuticorin and Colombo.

Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan recalled VOC's, also called Kappalottiya Thamizhan , pioneering effort in challenging the colonial rule. As part of Swadeshi movement, he started the “Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company”, procured two ships and launched the first indigenous Shipping service between Tuticorin and Colombo in 1906.
