‘Election Commission should be voter-friendly'

Union Minister for Shipping G. K. Vasan has said that Election Commission of India (ECI) should be voter-friendly while taking decisions during the polls.

Addressing an election meeting here on Thursday in which he sought votes for the DMK candidate and Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam, Mr. Vasan said that the decisions such as reduction of timing on the polling day should be taken in the interest of voters. Then only people would favour it.

Similarly, security to the leaders also should be given in an unbiased manner to all leaders. The Election Commission of India should keep these vital points while conducting the polls, he further added.

He pointed out that the campaigning of the national leaders like Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and Friday's meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would further strengthen the DMK-led alliance in the State.

“It has sent a clear signal that both State and Centre will be co-operating well to get many development schemes for the State in future too,” he said.

The Minister also promised Sankagiri voters that he would take necessary steps to construct an overbridge in the town and establish a milk chilling plant, which were the long-pending demands of the people.

He said that all welfare schemes and development projects would be continued if DMK alliance was voted to power again.

Later he left for Tiruchengode in Namakkal district where he campaigned for Congress candidate M. R. Sundaram.
