Marina lighthouse reopened to visitors

Union shipping minister G.K. Vasan on Thursday reopened the lighthouse on the Marina for visitors.

Talking to reporters after the reopening ceremony, Mr. Vasan said the place was readied two months ago. However, the authorities waited to complete the installation of all safety parameters, including stainless steel grills on the 10 floor, surveillance cameras and a lift, before inaugurating it.

The 46-metre-high lighthouse was closed to visitors nearly 20 years ago. In the intervening period, residents of Chennai and tourists from both within the country and abroad were unable to enjoy the vantage position the lighthouse gave.

Charges for visitors have now been fixed at Rs. 5 for child and Rs. 10 for an adult.

Mr. Vasan also inaugurated a technical museum within the lighthouse complex for which the entry fee is fixed at Rs. 10. The lighthouse will be open between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and in the evening, between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., on all days, except Mondays.

Seven Navtex monitoring stations will be established along the country’s coastline at a total cost of Rs. 20.25 crore. Work on this new facility is expected to be completed by December next year.

In Tamil Nadu, two such stations will be established — one at Muttam Point in Kanyakumari district and another at Porto Novo in Cuddalore district.

These stations will continuously check the weather conditions and pass on the message using MF transmitters at 518 KHz and transmit information in the local language, said Mr. Vasan.

Emergency exits too had been provided on every floor for the benefit of the visitors, he said.

The Minister was addressing after inaugurating the three-day-long Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign at Medavakkam near Chennai today, organised by PIB.  People should visit such awareness campaigns and know about all the welfare schemes and the ways & means to get full benefits, Shri Vasan asked the gathering. In this direction, the Minister commended the Public Information Campaigns that have been organized for the past seven years with the aim of enlightening the people about the various welfare/developmental schemes. For the benefits of the schemes to reach the common people, every one, right from Ministers to Panchayat leaders and the common people, should be involved, he noted. The exhibition that had been put up on the sidelines of the Campaign with more than 40 stalls highlights the priority schemes of the government. People should visit each and every stall, ask questions, and know about the schemes thoroughly.  The UPA government at the Centre has been implementing various welfare schemes for the common people for the past nine years, for both rural and urban people, Shri Vasan pointed out. The Bharat Nirman schemes are implemented under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister. These schemes provide all the basic facilities in the rural areas, like drinking water, irrigation, electricity, telecommunication, medical, housing, etc. The government wants the rural areas to have same basic facilities like in cities, he added.  Some of the priority schemes of the government are Right to Information, PM's 15-point programme for the welfare of the minorities, Jawaharlal Nehru New Urban Renewal Mission, etc., the Minister highlighted.  Shri Vasan noted with pride the implementation of MGNREA out of which 4.8 crore families are benefited. Since 2006 till 2013, Rs. 2, 38,400 cr. has been spent on the programme. He pointed out that the mid-day meal scheme, the world's biggest such scheme, was thought of and implemented some 60 years back itself by the visionary leader, Shri K. Kamaraj, who also introduced the uniform system for students so that there will not be any social differences among the students while studying.  This mid-day meal scheme has now been implemented throughout India by the UPA government. During 2013-14, Rs. 13,215 cr. has been allocated for this, out of which 12.5 crore students are benefited. Another important scheme is Food Security Scheme, which benefits 63% of rural population and 37% of urban population. Rs. 1, 27,000 cr. is the fund allocated for this, Shri Vasan said.  For education, Rs.27, 258 Crore has been allocated to ensure education for all, which has benefited 20 Crore students and drastically reduced non-school going number. Similarly for the welfare of SC/ST, Rs. 66,158 crore has been allocated, which is 12% more than last years. For minorities, the fund allocated is Rs. 3,514 crore, which is again 14% more. The government is also focusing on the welfare on women & children, for which Rs. 1, 74,370 cr. has been allotted, The opening of all-women bank is a step in this direction, Shri Vasan pointed out.  Shri Vasan noted that such campaigns are conducted for creating awareness about the schemes for which huge sums are allocated by the government. So people should fully utilise such opportunities and know about the schemes to reap full benefits out of the schemes.  Later, Shri Vasan observed that all the sections of the society, cutting across narrow political interests, must join the efforts of the government in implementing welfare schemes. The Minister also released 12 booklets brought out by PIB on the welfare schemes. He also handed over loan benefits to various groups/students, organised by Indian Bank.  Earlier, Shri K.M. Shipping Minister G K Vasan today said he expected tangible results from the recent dialogue between External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse towards ensuring safety of Tamils in the island and also put an end to attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen.
The talks Khurshid had with Rajapakse on Tamils issue was expected to yield results and lead to safety and restoration of the rights of the ethnic population in that nation, he told reporters here.
"The talks were held in a such a way that there would be a guarantee to the safety and restoring the rights of Sri Lankan Tamils", he said.
Noting that the Union Government has been laying special emphasis on checking attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy, he said, "I hope the visit of Khurshid will bring a positive end to the troubles faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen."
Vasan sought to remind that whenever the Indian fishermen faced trouble at the hands of Sri Lankan navy authorities, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee had taken up the issue with the External Affairs Ministry.
When asked whether India would participate in the CHOGAM summit to be hosted by Sri Lanka next month, he said a decision would be taken considering safety, rights and implementation of the 13th Amendment by the Island nation government.
Khurshid had visited Sri Lanka last week and held talks with Rajapakse and other top government leadership on a host of issues, including that of Indian fishermen languishing in jails and devolution of powers to the Tamils provinces.
Vasan avoided a direct reply when asked whether Congress will support DMK in the December four bye-election to Yercaud assembly constituency, but hastened add "after AICC takes a decision, the Tamil Nadu unit of the party would officially announce its stand".
Last week, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi wrote letters to various political parties including Congress seeking support for its candidate in the bypoll, but left parties have already rejected the request.

Vasan wants DMDK in UPA for 2014 LS elections

Asked about the chances of DMDK being a part of the UPA, Vasan said: "It will be an immense pleasure to have a good party in our alliance." He was speaking to reporters at TNCC headquarters on Saturday. The two leaders enjoy good camaraderie, with Vijayakanth visiting Vasan's father, G K Moopanar's memorial every year. The two leaders had met recently on Moopanar's death anniversary with hundreds of supporters from both sides, triggering speculation of a possible political equation.
On DMK leader M Karunanidhi's letter to political parties, including the Congress and the BJP, seeking support for his party's candidate for the Yercaud bypoll, Vasan said the AICC high command would decide on the issue and an announcement would be made officially by TNCC president B S Gnanadesikan soon. Narikuravas granted Scheduled Tribes status

The Centre has taken a favourable decision on the demand for enlisting Narikuravas, a nomadic community living in Tamil Nadu, in the Scheduled Tribes list, Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan said in Chennai on Saturday.

Rahul Gandhi's stand reflects opinion of Congress and the people: GK Vasan

Joining the chorus of support in the government for Rahul Gandhi's stand against the ordinance on convicted lawmakers, Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan on Saturday said the Congress Vice President has reflected the opinion of the party as well as the people of the country.

"Rahul Gandhi has expressed his opinion very clearly. It is not only his opinion. I think he has echoed the voice of the Congress party from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and also the people of the country," Vasan told reporters here.

"I'm sure that the importance of the subject will be taken by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after he comes from his foreign visit and accordingly an appropriate decision will be taken," he said.

"Taking the popular sentiment of the country, there should be no difference within the Congress." Rahul Gandhi had yesterday denounced the controversial ordinance to negate the Supreme Court verdict on convicted lawmakers as "complete nonsense" and which "should be torn up and thrown away". Gandhi, whose remarks causing tremors in the government, had said he realised that what he felt about the ordinance was not in harmony with the Cabinet's decision and the Core Group's view.

After Rahul denounced the ordinance, Union ministers Milind Deora and Shashi Tharoor too opposed the measure.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid had said "if the party leadership feels that there is a need for a second look...the party will tell the government .
