INDIA NEEDS TO CHART OUT A PATH OF INCLUSIVE GROWTH-MINISTER G.K.VASAN

India needs to chart out a path of inclusive growth that brings benefits to the poor, strengthens social protection measures and phases out poverty and hunger, Union Shipping Minister G. K. Vasan said on Sunday.
Addressing a “Political Forum” at the international conference on “Eliminating Hunger and Poverty” organised by the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), Mr. Vasan said that while poverty rates in India had declined over the past decade, the incidence of poverty remained high at 28 per cent.
“Understanding the livelihood systems of the poor is crucial to effective poverty reduction,” Mr. Vasan said. The concept of livelihood security should encompass food security, social security and psychic security, he said.
POVERTY ALLEVIATION
Pointing out that poverty alleviation had been one of the guiding principles of the planning process in India, Mr. Vasan said the growth-oriented approach had been reinforced by focusing on specific sectors that provided greater opportunities to the people to participate in the development process. This involved integrating the various dimensions of poverty relating to health, education and other basic services in the planning process, he said.
